Ketchikan: The Salmon Capital of the World

From fighting King Salmon to deep-sea Halibut, here is your 2026 angler's guide.

Why Fish in Ketchikan?

Ketchikan earned its title as the "Salmon Capital of the World" for a reason. Its unique position on the Inside Passage makes it a prime intercept point for all five species of North American Salmon as they return to their spawning grounds.

Salmon Runs

King (Chinook): May - June

Silver (Coho): August - September

Pink (Humpy): July - August

Run dates are critical. If you want the "big fight," target the early season for Kings or late season for Silvers.

Halibut Fishing

Halibut are available year-round but peak from June to August. These "barn doors" can weigh over 100 lbs and require heavy gear and deep-sea charters, usually departing early in the morning.

2026 Port Logistics

If you are docking at **Ward Cove** (Norwegian/Oceania), allow an extra 45 minutes for shuttle time to reach the downtown charter docks. Most independent captains will NOT pick up at Ward Cove.

Licensing & Regulations

All anglers over 16 must have a valid **Alaska Fishing License**. Most charters can issue these on the boat, but buying one online in advance is highly recommended.

License Type 2026 Estimated Cost Requirement
1-Day Non-Resident $15 - $25 Mandatory for all.
King Salmon Stamp $15 approx. Only if targeting Kings in May/June.

Ship Your Catch Home?

Yes, many Ketchikan processors will clean, flash-freeze, and FedEx your catch directly to your home. This is often more cost-effective than trying to bring it on the cruise ship.
